Text: 2 Samuel 5:1-3

1 Samuel 16:16-21

Though hired to be a harp player he rose swiftly to become armor bearer and ADC.

We see a combination of hard work and diligent application combined with Gods favor being responsible for David being a high flying career person.

The purpose of this session is to explore in details these 7 areas

We can pray for favor and God will grant us favor but without diligent application you fall short of achieving Gods best for your career.

Proverbs 22:29 Seest a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings and not before mean men.

Proverbs 10:4 The functional part of this scriptures are BECOMETH and MAKETH.

Puts in proper perspective the place of self-application.

We don’t just pray for favor and sit down doing nothing. We must combine Gods favor with diligent self-application. Paul aptly put it the grace of God was not in vain for I labored more abundantly than all the other apostles. 1 Corinthians 15:10

In the life of Daniel and Joseph we see the same pattern

Daniel 1: 16-21

We see a combination of Favor and diligent application.

Being responsible for Daniel high flying career. In fact Daniel was so good that he served 3 different kings.

Daniel 2:15-19

We see the example of diligent application again when the decree went forth to kill all the wise men.

Daniel went and said give me time and he inquired of the Lord and God revealed it.

May God make you the problem solver in your office. The man that is known to deliver results.

The 7 Attributes:

  1. Go into your job and career with an attitude to Learn not just to earn especially if you are starting your career.

Learn learn and Learn don’t just go and earn a living go and learn the whole business system.

Among the Jews nobody goes to work to be an employee for life. They go to work to learn with a Mindset I give myself 7 years after which I start my company

Same with Asians. This idea of work from start to retirement makes one mentally lazy because hardly do u see the big picture.

2. Have a reputation as someone that is so good in what you do and you deliver result.

Daniel 5:8-11

There is a man in thy kingdom

Now let Daniel be called and he will show u the interpretation.

Your direct boss should be so sure of your capacity to deliver results that they can boast about you.

3. Invest in personal and career development. Invest in upgrading your skill set on the job.

Certifications are important. Nobody will consider u for top management if you don’t have relevant master’s degree.

The age is coming down and young people are doing academic exploits. Read an article on the youngest PhD holders in Nigeria some were in their early twenties. The youngest was 22 yrs.

4. Have a keen eye for opportunity.

The reason u invest in personal and career development is so that u can take advantage of opportunities to move up.

When that opening finally shows up u will have the competence and certification to position your self as a best fit for the job.

POOR-Passing over opportunities repeatedly

My best story on power of personal preparation and being ready for you opportunities is found in the story of David and Goliath.

He picked 5 stones from the Brook but used only 1st one because through years of diligent application he was well prepared.

5. Highly Valuable to the team. Always ask yourself how can I be more valuable. Think in terms of value addition.

Don’t just show up and count the days to month end to collect salary think in terms of how can I add value to what I do.

Story of receptionist whose job is to greet welcome and serve tea.

But in free time kept analyzing data on customers who bought consistently and discovered 70% of our sales is from this age segment and proposed why don’t we focus more on this age segment and the sales blew up.

That is an employee that won’t be a receptionist for long because she has found how to add value to what she is doing

Proverbs 13:23 Much food on the tillage of the poor.

This point calls for a different Mindset.

May God make you appreciate in value in that Organization.

Genesis 30:25

6. Develop a 5 year Vision

If you are still here in the next 5 years where do u hope to be?

If you have a vision that u are stepping out to start your own in 5 years it will affect how you learn on the job, how you save and even how you relate to every client.

It gives u a basis for meaningful self-evaluation and keeps you grounded.

7. Top 5% in your field. Who are u competing against?  Where are u playing in your mind’s eye? Top 5% of any field u work in should be your aim.

You must have a vision for the top.

Aim for the stars

Don’t just get by

Don’t just be satisfied with the crumbs

I can assure u the view is better from the director’s corner.
