A.W. Tozer once wrote: “The treacherous enemy facing the Church of Jesus today is dictatorship of the routine, when the routine becomes ‘Lord’ in the life of the Church“.
Programmes are organized and the prevailing conditions are accepted as normal.
The church, as it is today, needs another spiritual thrust. We have unconsciously slid into the routine, and the routine is normal with us. We have settled down to the normal and pretended there could be nothing better. Gradually, we have witnessed a decline in spiritual truth in our churches. Evidences of this include the degeneration in the exercise and operation of the Holy Spirit and the demonstration of the supernatural.
Our churches are full of men and women in their thousands, but few disciples. We have more miracle, blessing and prosperity seekers than true disciples of Christ. People have more passion for material possessions than for the God who gives material blessings. A generation that carries on this way will sooner than later find out that they have built houses on quicksand – on a faulty foundation.
Yet, there is a quest, a deep hunger in the hearts of some for a fresh fire, another heavenly burst that will bring the church back to the right path. There exists this lingering feeling that the Church is overdue for another fresh wave of revival. In the words of Elijah, we could hear, “the sound of the abundance of rain.”
Exactly how or what dimension it will take, we do not know. But we have every cause to believe that God is about to visit His church again. This series, “A Daily Prayer Guide for Revival Seekers”, is our modest way of contributing towards preparing God’s people for what is coming shortly. Revival cannot be planned for, but then God’s people must prepare for it.
I agree completely with Norman Grubb, who in his book, “Continuous Revival: The Secret of Victorious Living” said that revival is not a one-off event we have to wait for, but a continuous experience. Revival, in its truest sense, is an everyday affair right down within the reach of everyday folk, to be experienced each day in our hearts, homes, churches and fields of service. When revival does burst forth in greater and more public ways, thank God! But meanwhile, we should see to it that we, ourselves are constantly revived persons, which, of course, means that others are getting revived in our circles. By this means, God can have channels of revival by the thousands in all the churches of the world.”
May God sow the hunger for revival in your heart as you use this daily prayer guide.
