25 December 2014, Christmas Day Sevice
Christmas is about knowing and acknowledging him who is born a king and worshiping him as such. The Magi who came to worship Jesus were believed to be Gentiles. They acknowledged JESUS as the “King of the Jews” and worshiped him as Lord. As King, JESUS reigns; as a King, he is to be honoured; as King, he is to be worshiped and adored; as King, he is the Lord of our lives; as King, he occupies the throne of his father David in the kingdom of God.
I recently listened to a Christmas Carol titled, “A King is Born.” The song immediately reminded me of Matthew 2:2, which declares, “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East and have come to worship him.” Is JESUS truly a King? In what sense? What kind of King is he? Let us answer these question from the scriptures.
The scriptures reveals the following about the Kingship of Jesus:
The Old Testament prophets prophesied that he would be a King Jeremiah .23:5-7; Daniel 7:13-14.
In Psalm 2:6, the Messiah is portrayed as a King sitting on the Holy hill of ZION.
Jesus came to establish a kingdom of which he was the King Isaiah 9:6; Luke 1:33
Jesus rode into JERUSALEM as a King sitting on a donkey, thus fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9.
Jesus acknowledged that he was born a king before Pilate John 18:33-37
At the end of the age, Jesus will sit in his kingly position to judge the nation’s in righteousness Matthew 25:34-40
At the end of the age, Jesus will conquer his enemies and reign as King of kings and Lord of lords Revelations 17:14; Revelations 19:16.
The apostle Paul declares that he is the only sovereign (potentate), the King of kings and the Lord of lords 1 Timothy 6:15
In this season of Christmas, let us acknowledge the kingship of JESUS. As a King, he reigns and lives in us, and let us submit to his Lordship as the King of kings and Lord of lords. Like the Gentiles who came to JESUS, let us fall down and worship him, and present the gifts of praise and thanksgiving to him this Christmas Day.
