Key Passage: 1 Samuel 17:37
Pastor Austen Ukachi
As we prepare for thanksgiving, one area of our lives we have to thank God for is for his deliverance. We have experienced Deliverance from danger, death, accident, etc. Think of those whom The Lord delivered recently in Tacloban in the Philippines from the typhoon Haiyan.
The bible is a book on deliverance. In it we find several deliverances God gave various peoples and nations. The deliverance of:
The children of the children of Israel from Egypt
The deliverance of Israel from her many adversaries
The deliverance of Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, Jeremiah; Daniel, the 3 Hebrew children, Peter, Paul, etc. Recall also Our deliverance from sin, sickness, poverty, fear, etc.
One of such deliverances was one David experienced. 1 Samuel 22 is believed to be among the last words of King David. The whole chapter is a thanksgiving to God for his many deliverances to David. Six times David uses the word deliver in the whole chapter. If we study David’s life one would understand why he regards God as a deliverer. God delivered David from the Lion, from the Bear, from Goliath, from Saul, from the hands of the Philistines, from Absalom, from Ahitophel, from Shimei, and from many other enemies.
In Psalms 34:4,6,7,17,19 David speaks of his rich experiences on deliverance.
No wonder In 1 Samuel 22, repeated in Psalms 18:31-50, David gives thanksgiving for the many deliverances The Lord gave to him. We all can identify with David’s testimony of deliverance during this season of thanksgiving.
