The death of Jesus secured for us three main deliverances that are mentioned in the Bible. These are Deliverance from this evil age (Gal.1: 4); deliverance from the power of darkness to the kingdom of his dear son (Colossians 1:13); and deliverance from the wrath to come (1These. 1:10). All three operations are made possible by the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. In addition, he is always delivering us from various trials (2 Corinthians 1:10; 2 Peter 2:9).
Suicidal tendencies are a spirit of the age from which Christ come to delivers us. This spirit comes to snuff off the lives of many especially the youths. Increasingly, the incidence of suicide is on the rise among our youths not for want of necessities of life, but simply due to the dissatisfaction with life. It is difficult to imagine why youths with the best that life can offer would decide to yield to the temptation of suicide at the slightest provocation. Mindlessly they bring untold heartbreak to their parents and loved ones.
Jesus came to deliver us from the snare of fear. Fear is a torment. Most times, we live under the shadow of the fear of the past, the fear of failure, the fear of death, the fear of accident, the fear of travelling, the fear of perceived enemies, and the uncertainties of the future paralyze many. We must constantly remember that Christ has not given us the spirit of fear, but of love and a sound mind. We must also never forget that Jesus came to “…deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.” So, the power of Christ’s death has set us free from the fear of death. Satan cannot overturn what decree which Christ has established. If we do not yield to fear and the spirit of death, then we do not need to fear anything. We have been set free.
Anxiety is a characteristic of this evil age which Satan brings upon us. Anxiety is responsible for worries about life and the future. Anxiety causes stress and deadly high blood pressure which leads to the sudden death of many. Jesus took time to teach about how we can avoid anxiety in this life.
Jesus’s death also includes deliverance from sin and its power. His death nailed the power of sin at the cross thereafter setting us free. Consequentially we can, by faith, assert, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2 NKJV).
Because wickedness is so prevalent in our age Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “deliver us from the evil one.” Jesus came so that we may have freedom from Satan who is the architect of all wickedness.
Lastly, we have been delivered from the wrath that is to come. According to the apostle Paul, we have been delivered from the wrath to come. “And to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come” (I Thessalonians 1:10 NKJV). There is the temporary wrath which is to come on the earth (Rev. 6:16, 17; 19:15)
And there is the eternal wrath which is to come on men (John 3:36; Romans 5:9-10; 1 These.5:9).
