GOD IS A GIVER (7)

“And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore, so that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt” (1 Kings 4:29-30).

“And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30).

We all need the wisdom to succeed in life. Wisdom is defined as the application of knowledge. Knowledge is the acquisition of facts, while wisdom is its application. Understanding is insight and the interpretation of facts. Wisdom gives insight and foresight over issues. Solomon was publicly acclaimed for his wisdom by the way he judged the case of two contending women who laid claim to a son. God gave Solomon the wisdom that brought him fame and public approbation.

There is a difference between “earthly wisdom” and the “wisdom that comes from above” (James 3:14–18). Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord and ends with serving God in obedience and worship. Leaders, Kings, Men, Women, Youths and children of all clime and ages need the supply of divine wisdom to live right. Only fools shun wisdom. The Bible enjoins us to get wisdom at all costs. According to Solomon, not even God functioned without wisdom. “The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old” (Proverbs 8:22).

To lead men successfully you need wisdom. When the disciples wanted to appoint leaders to serve tables, they chose men who were “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.” Because Stephen was full of wisdom, those who disputed with him could not resist his wisdom (Acts 6:1-10).

Men of wisdom are in high demand to solve the problems that bedevil society. When there was a famine in Egypt, Joseph, a man with wisdom was invited (Gen. 41:37-42). Daniel had the Spirit of wisdom which was why he excelled in Babylon (Daniel 5:11-12).

Kings need wisdom to reign. “By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; by me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly. (Proverbs 8:15-16). David by wisdom conquered Goliath. By wisdom he refrained from touching Saul the anointed of God. By wisdom, he fought and conquered the Philistines. In wisdom, he won the hearts of the commanders of Saul and the elders of Israel to pay allegiance to him. (1 Chro.12)

Wars are fought and won on the basis of wisdom. “Wisdom is better than weapons of war; But one sinner destroys much good.” (‬‬‬‬‬Ecclesiastes 9:18 NKJV)

Proverbs 16:16 says, “To get wisdom is better than gold.” Why? Because gold can buy almost anything in this world. But it cannot buy everlasting life. Life is not about how much wealth you have as much as the wisdom you have. Wisdom is a defence (Eccl. 7:11-12).

Wisdom gives you a competitive edge over others. The wise hardly lack earthly wisdom means because they always apply their heart in solving problems. Wisdom ranks more than earthly treasures. Many have earthly treasures but lack the wisdom to manage them.

Christ is the wisdom of God. “In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians‬ ‮2:3‬ NKJV). He is the source and giver of wisdom. Wisdom is given freely to those who ask from God. Those who ask in faith receive the wisdom God gives.‬‬

Don’t be neutral toward wisdom. Prize her. Esteem her. Desire her. Cherish her. Covet her, and she will honour you with her presence (Proverbs 4:8-9).
